Spotlight: Patricia Piccinini
Patricia Piccinini is the Australian artist who created the work “We are Family,” “Leather Landscape,” “Natures Little Helpers” and others which were displayed at the 2003 Venice Biennale. My personal favorite is “We are Family.” These hyper-realistic sculptures combine human and animal qualities to create thought provoking situations about the environment and biotechnology. The reason I find her work is so fascinating is because she uses her understanding of anatomy and biology to create beings that seemingly could exist. This combination of science fiction and science fact has always been intriguing to me because it can help me to see normal aspects of life in a new light, almost as if our own culture was alien and not the world presented in the sculpture. Anyways, for her amazing use of anatomy in sculpture, even if it is fantasy, I wanted to share some of her work here.
